Planning for a beer party with tonnes of food on a top tourist destination site. If that is whay you plan, then there isn’t a better place in the world to have fun than sixteen days in Sept-Oct in Munich. Although, Oktoberfests are also held in German pockets across America with Cincinnati contesting for as many visitors as Munich itself, the real charm of Oktoberfest Beer Party is in Munich following a tradition which is nearly 200 years old.
The very first Oktoberfest party was held in 1810 to honour the wedding of Crown Prince Luitpold I and Princess Theressa. It was a large public celebration meant with unlimited beer and chicken sausages. The tradition has continued ever since with celebrations every autumn. Although Oktoberfests are also held across America by immigrants from Germany, they are much smaller in size and lack the charm that the traditional Oktoberfest possesses.
The biggest distinguishing factor about Oktoberfest is not only the vastness of the entire event but also the style of beer served. Oktoberfest is said to be a beer lovers paradise with over 6% alcohol in a gold shaped larger which has been kept for over a month. There are different malt flavours used such as those from Vienna and Tettnang. A small anecdote states that in earlier times, lack of refrigeration meant that these beers were malted way back in February and kept in ice-cold caves so that they were ready for consumption in late September, hence the timing of the festival.
The traditional food served with Oktoberfest beer is Chicken or Veal sausage. They are flavoured with a wide variety of herbs and spices to make for one delicious menu. Food served along with beer is immense as whole chickens are spit roasted an served in large quantities to make for one delicious beer fest.
The time is also famous for a large type of Beer games and is widely touted as one of the best travel destinations to hang around during the autumn season.
